SHILLONG, May 19: The UDP on Sunday appreciated the initiative taken by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in identifying the urban spaces to decongest Shillong.
UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said that this has been long overdue since Shillong has been growing rapidly.
According to him, the increase in population density, congestion, pollution, and lack of other civic amenities is a cause for concern. He said that the iconic park, conceived much earlier and wonderfully designed by Atelier, will add to the aesthetic beauty.
The UDP general secretary said that the other places identified will definitely help in this regard, too.
Meanwhile, Mawthoh suggested the need for comprehensive plans for cleaning Wah Umkhrah, Wah Umshyrpi, and other water bodies, as well as a proper drainage and sewerage system for the city.
“The foresight and vision of the CM are well appreciated and, if materialised, will restore the lost glory of this beautiful city, which was once labeled as the Scotland of the East. Let us also give credit to a person who deserves it,” the UDP general secretary added.
The state government has identified around 25 acres of land to implement various infrastructure projects aimed at beautifying and decongesting Shillong.
It may be mentioned that on Saturday, the Chief Minister inspected the PWD office, Ka Phan Nonglait Park, Brightwell Bungalow at Barik Point, Anjalee Point, and Polo. He was accompanied by officials from the PWD, Urban Affairs, and Forest and Environment departments.
“The government has plans to develop new walkways, a green park, and recreational spaces to enhance Shillong’s aesthetic appeal and provide the residents with more public spaces,” Sangma had revealed, adding that museums and other cultural centres will be established to showcase Meghalaya’s rich and diverse heritage.
He said an iconic structure will come up at Barik Point, including the installation of a national flag that will symbolise unity and pride and be visible from various parts of the city.
