MAWKYRWAT, May 21: In a significant development for the apiculture sector, the first honey-processing plant in South West Khasi Hills district was on Tuesday inaugurated at Tynnai village.
Established under the Apiculture Mission 2.0 at a cost of Rs. 30 lakh, the Tynnai Honey Processing Plant was inaugurated by Mawkyrwat Block Development Officer I. Lawrniang during a programme here.
Lawrniang, who was the chief guest for the inaugural programme, commended the Tynnai Multipurpose Cooperative Society for its commitment and teamwork, attributing the project’s success to the joint efforts with the District Commerce and Industries Centre (DCIC), Mawkyrwat, and the Horticulture Department.
Referring to the acclaimed quality of Tynnai’s honey, he expressed optimism that the new facility will enhance product quality and increase production.
He said the expansion is expected to facilitate broader distribution within the state and across the country.
Further emphasising the crucial roles of product quality, effective marketing and strategic branding, Lawrniang argued that these elements are essential for raising awareness and driving demand for Tynnai honey across the country.
He projected that heightened demand would substantially benefit the local cooperative and beekeepers by bolstering profits and improving livelihoods.
D. Kharjana, Deputy Director (Planning) at the Commerce and Industries Department, spoke about the government’s goals through the apiculture missions. She noted that promoting beekeeping, a skill deeply rooted in local tradition and passed down through generations, aims to enhance livelihoods. She outlined that the Apiculture Mission 1.0 and 2.0, which encompass training, awareness initiatives, and the establishment of the processing plant, represent a collaborative endeavor between the Horticulture Department and local agencies to support this vital industry.
