SHILLONG, May 26: A two-day-long deliberation on Rainfed Agriculture was held by ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, in partnership with Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat. The event, held on May 16 and 17, aimed to address the critical challenges and opportunities of rain-dependent farming systems, particularly in the Northeastern region.
The deliberation, supported by the ICAR-Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture (CRIDA), brought together leading agricultural research institutions. The focus was on the ICAR’s two All India Coordinated Research Projects on Dryland Agriculture and Agrometeorology network, showcasing a concerted effort to bolster agricultural resilience in rainfed areas.
Prominent figures in agricultural research, including Prof Panjab Singh, former Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education and Director-General of ICAR, and Dr Vinod Kumar Singh, Director of CRIDA, played key roles in the discussions. Their expertise highlighted the importance of developing climate-resilient farming practices to enhance crop yields and sustainability.
Over the two days, experts from various regions of India shared insights and practical solutions tailored to the unique climatic challenges of the Northeastern region. The event emphasised the need for robust strategies to improve the productivity and resilience of rainfed agriculture, which is vital for the livelihoods of many farmers in this area.
A significant outcome of the deliberation was the release of a bulletin and folder containing valuable information for farmers and agricultural stakeholders. These resources are expected to serve as essential guides for implementing best practices in rainfed agriculture.  The deliberation also aimed to foster greater collaboration and knowledge sharing among researchers and extension workers. By bridging the gap between scientific research and on-ground farming practices, the event sought to empower farmers in the Northeast to navigate the complexities of rainfed agriculture effectively.
