Cyclone Remal: CD&HG & SDRF respond effectively across state

SHILLONG, May 29: As Cyclone Remal continues to wreak havoc, the Home Guards & Civil Defence (CD&HG) as well as State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel have been successful in responding quickly and effectively to cyclone-triggered emergencies across Meghalaya.
According to a statement here, the CD&HG personnel, led by Sub-Inspector F. Lamare, carried out a successful operation at Pamrakrai village, Wapung, in East Jaintia Hills to remove a tree that had fallen onto the roof of a vehicle and house belonging to one Welson Shiangshai.
The team, stationed in Khliehriat, received the distress call at 8 am and swiftly arrived at the location by 9 am to execute the operation, ensuring no further damage to the property. The same was successfully completed within a few hours.
In another operation in Tpeppale, East Jaintia Hills, Sub-Inspector Y. Challam led a Quick Response Team to address a critical situation in Tpeppale where a fallen tree had entangled electrical wires, posing significant inconvenience and danger to commuters. “Acting on the information received, the team coordinated with the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) and the Forest Department to undertake a highly complex and exhaustive operation. The coordinated effort ensured that the tree was removed without causing any damage to the electric poles or further disrupting the power supply. The operation, which took two hours to complete, highlighted the team’s ability to manage such intricate situations efficiently,” the statement said.
In the Garo Hills region, too, the response to the Cyclone Remal was swift.
Led by Sub-Inspector BD Sangma, the SDRF removed a tree, which had fallen on electric wires on the road leading to college of Community Science, Central Agricultural University, Sangsanggre, Tura on Tuesday.
In Matchakolgre, Tura, the SDRF personnel, under the leadership of Sub-Inspector BD Sangma, cleared an uprooted tree that had fallen on electric poles and wires. The operation was conducted swiftly and safely, restoring normalcy to the area.
In another similar operation, a team led by Sub-Inspector BD Sangma successfully cut and cleared a tree posing a threat to a house in Babupara, Tura. The operation ensured the safety of the residents and prevented potential damage to the property.
Meanwhile, an operation to remove a fallen tree at Tura Civil Hospital is under way during the filing of this report.
