SHILLONG, June 1: The state is grappling with widespread landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains, leading to road blockages and significant damage. A particularly tragic incident in Nongpriang village under Shella-Bholaganj C&RD Block resulted in the loss of four lives.
Authorities attribute these landslides to a combination of factors, including prolonged rainfall, deforestation, and improper construction practices. The impact is especially severe in rural areas where building regulations are often disregarded, resulting in homes being built on unstable slopes without proper standards.
Residents in landslide-prone areas are being urged to evacuate for their safety.
Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills, Abhilash Baranwal, stated that his office is closely monitoring the situation and has instructed officials to evacuate those in vulnerable locations.
Similarly, Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, SC Sadhu mentioned that a specific advisory will soon be issued to ensure people in high-risk areas are evacuated promptly.
The recent events have highlighted the urgent need for contextually appropriate building regulations in hill settlements to minimise environmental impact and ensure sustainable development.
In response to the crisis, the Minister in-charge of Revenue and Disaster Management Department visited Nongpriang village under Shella-Bholaganj C&RD Block on Saturday. During the visit, the minister met with the bereaved families, offering condolences and assuring them of the government’s support. An ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh was handed over to each next of kin.
The minister emphasised the importance of community preparedness, stating, “Our state is vulnerable to many hazards. Kindly be alert and prepared. As the community is the first responder to any emergency, you should be well-prepared until government agencies arrive, especially in far-flung villages. We have seen commendable support from the residents of Nongpriang and hope to see similar cooperation in other villages.”
Accompanying the minister was Local MLA of Sohra, Gavin Mylliem, who expressed gratitude for the minister’s visit and the assistance provided.
