NONGPOH, June 5: The Ri-Bhoi Police on Wednesday successfully rescued three locals from Assam, following a kidnapping incident.
The incident was reported to the police by one Kirit Dohtdong, wife of one of the abductees, Iohborlang Kharsati, a resident of Mawlang village.
Dohtdong informed the police that her husband, along with his friends Kostarwell Jyrwa from Lumdaitkhla village and Samsul Ali from Byrnihat, had departed for Guwahati at around 7 am to buy a JCB.
By 4 pm, Dohtdong received a call from her husband’s phone only to find that they had been kidnapped by unknown individuals who demanded a ransom of Rs. 7 lakh.
In response, a team from the Ri-Bhoi District Executive Force (RBDEF) set out for Nalbari district of Assam at 9:30 am on Wednesday, after tracing the location of the abductees.
The Ri-Bhoi Police also alerted their counterparts from Nalbari.
By 3:30 pm, the Ri-Bhoi Police received information from Mukulmua Police Station that two suspects, viz. Abdul Aziz and Samsul Hoque from No1 Kaplabori, Nalbari district, had been apprehended with an unregistered blue Ignis vehicle.
Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed and provided the phone numbers of their accomplices.
The numbers were then traced to the Tihu National Highway, and subsequently, Tihu Police Station was informed.
Upon the receipt of information, a checkpoint was set up by Tihu Police.
On noticing the checkpoint, the kidnappers tried to reverse the vehicle and flee the scene. However, the abductees managed to escape by jumping from the vehicle.
They were then recovered by Tihu Police and safely returned to Ri-Bhoi.
The kidnappers, on the other hand, managed to flee. However, police are on the hunt to nab them.
