SHILLONG, June 14: Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma has said that the state government will soon hold discussions on the high rate of fees charged by certain educational institutes in the city.
Speaking to media persons on Friday, Sangma said the government has already collected data in this regard and they will hold discussions with stakeholders on bringing down the fee or regularising it.
Urging the institutes to support students hailing from underprivileged background, he added that the institutes should justify the income generated and the expenditure incurred.
Speaking about his three-day visit to the Garo Hills leading a delegation of State Education Commission, he said the team inspected the Captain Williamson Sangma State University.
Sangma said faculty for the state university would be appointed soon after the Vice Chancellor is appointed for which the process is on.
He mentioned that the infrastructure for the first phase of the university is ready.
According to Sangma, the government will also call for a review of the implementation of the National Education Policy and the challenges associated with it.
He also said that the Shillong Engineering College would be made operational soon and though they were planning to inspect the site they could not do so.
He pointed out that certain procedures which need to be followed before making the college operational is being taken care of.
