SHILLONG, June 20: Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma on Thursday said he is examining if there is a need to appoint an MLA from the Trinamool Congress as the new leader of opposition in the state.
The TMC is now the largest opposition party with five MLAs. The Congress and the VPP have four members each in the House after Congress’s Saleng A Sangma resigned from the Assembly following his win in the Tura Lok Sabha poll.
The Speaker said he is yet to receive submissions from the Opposition in this regard. “I have not received any communication suggesting that the Leader of Opposition should be changed,” he said.
As present, Congress MLA, Ronnie V Lyngdoh holds the post of Leader of Opposition.
The Speaker said earlier, the Congress had five MLAs and they had a letter of support from the VPP (with four MLAs) taking the total to nine, due to which the decision to taken to given the post to the Congress.
To a query on whether the LO will be from the TMC, he said, “I will have to consult with all the opposition parties. I will call them very soon and hold discussions with them after which we will get a clear picture.”
