Govt directs SWKH DC to probe illegal coal mining

SHILLONG, June 23: The state government has directed the deputy commissioner of South West Khasi Hills to conduct an inquiry into allegations of illegal coal mining in the district and submit a detailed report within seven days.
“The Deputy Commissioner, South West Khasi Hills, is hereby directed to conduct an inquiry into the alleged illegal mining of coal taking place in South West Khasi Hills District under Nonghyllam Police Station by Skingford Nongbri,” stated an order issued by the Mining and Geology department, adding, “…and submit detailed report to the undersigned within 7 (seven) days for onward submission to Justice (Retd) BP Katakey as desired by him. Further, he is to take strict action against the person(s) under the provisions of MMDR Act, 1957 if the allegation is found to be true.”
The order further stated that the deputy commissioner will be assisted in the inquiry by the Superintendent of Police of the district.
