SHILLONG, June 28: Months after the proscribed HNLC walked out of the tripartite peace talks, the state government on Friday said they were ready to discuss the outfit’s demand for amnesty.
Speaking to media persons here on Friday, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the state government is talking to the Union government and even holding communications with the HNLC as to what extent they can go on the issue of granting amnesty.
Stating that amnesty can be granted for minor crimes, the CM added that they would have to look at heinous crimes committed by the outfit and things have to be decided on a case-to-case basis.
Asked about the recent arrests of HNLC sleeper cell members, he said the arrested persons are individuals associated with different organisations for money.
Sangma also stated that the government is finding out ways to nab any extortion efforts by the outfit or other persons.
