SHILLONG, June 28: The Federation of Persons with Disabilities, an organising comprising PwDs, on Friday called on Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, seeking an increase in the unemployment allowance.
After submitting a petition in this regard to the chief minister, federation spokesperson, Starwin Kharjana, informed that they have requested the state government to increase the unemployment allowance for the PwDs, who have cleared the class 10 examination or are further qualified, from Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000 per month.
Doing so, Kharjana added, would help them uplift their standard of living and meet the basic necessities of life.
He also informed that the PwDs in the state had been applying for the Chief Minister’s Social Assistance since January 2023 from the office of Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) but the same was yet to be sanctioned.
Appealing to the government to consider new applicants and make the necessary sanctions for them, Kharjana said this was the only source of their income.
With regard to the PwDs employed as muster roll in different government departments, the Federation requested the government to regularise their posts under the Group-D category.
“As per the RPWD Act 2016 Chapter VI section 33 (clause i-iii) the Federation would like to request the government to appoint one member in the MPSC and one each in all the DSCs to look after the job recruitment for Persons with Disabilities. The Federation further requests the Government to identify the posts for the Persons with Disabilities before sending the advertisements to the MPSC and DSCs,” he said.
