TURA, July 1: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) from Karukol in South Garo Hills has moved South Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, expressing discontent over the delay in the repair work of the suspension bridge over the Simsang river at Rewak.
In its complaint, the GSU pointed out that the delay in the repair work was not only affecting the general public but also posing a threat to the lives of school and college-going students, who use small local boats to cross the river during heavy rains without life jackets or safety gears.
The suspension bridge happens to be the only one in the entire area that connects NH-217 to Rewak and its adjoining areas. The bridge acts as a lifeline to the local residents who use it on a regular basis.
According to the GSU, after the bridge got damaged during floods in 2022, funds were sanctioned by the government for its repair. However, the contractor, who was allotted the work, has kept its completion pending till date.
Pointing out that the people from the area were facing many challenges in the absence of the bridge, the union urged the DC to look into the matter.
Meanwhile, in a separate complaint also to the deputy commissioner, the GSU also raised the issue of frequent power cuts at Nengkong, Emangre, Karukol, Dalenggittim, Halwa Atong, Rewak and its adjoining areas.
The union also pointed out the probable cause of the power cuts which include lack of man power to look after electric poles and wires in the rural areas, zero lattice tower in the flood zone and hilly areas and lack of transformers at Mandang, Nengkong, Konagittim and Karukol.
The union, while putting the blame on the MeECL for failing to look into its shortcomings, urged the DC to look into the matter and take steps to ensure that the area has uninterrupted power supply in the future.
