SHILLONG, July 2: The office of the Chief Commissioner of Goods and Services Taxes (GST) in Shillong celebrated the 7th anniversary of the GST rollout on Tuesday, under the theme ‘Sashakth Vyapar Samagr Vikas’ (empowered trade, overall growth).
The event focused on the impact of GST on tax rates for household goods, highlighting how the implementation of GST has led to savings on food items and items of mass consumption, thereby enhancing the ease of living for households.
Superintendent of Tax KK Marpna acknowledged the complexities of administering GST. “State administering GST is undeniably challenging, given its complexity and intricacies. It is therefore imperative that we continually enhance our skill sets and empower our workforce to navigate these challenges adeptly,” Marpna said. She also mentioned that in March, the department signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes, and Narcotics (NACIN) Shillong to facilitate regular training and workshops for officers, aiming to improve GST administration and ensure effective implementation.
Commissioner of Audit Shillong, HM Anal, discussed the positive economic impact of GST, noting the continuous increase in GST collections. She emphasised that GST has brought transparency and prevented tax leakage. “Many new businesses have registered, which indicates that the country’s economy is flourishing,” she added.
