SHILLONG, July 4: With Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s wife and treasurer of NPP national committee, Mehtab Chandee emerging as the frontrunner for the party ticket to contest the upcoming Gambegre Assembly bypoll, the Congress on Thursday said they will field a strong candidate in Gambegre which was earlier represented by party MLA and now Lok Sabha member, Saleng A Sangma.
The Congress statement comes a day after the ruling NPP reportedly zeroed down on the name of Mehtab Chandee as the party candidate for the upcoming bye-election.
Meghalaya Congress working president Deborah Ch Marak told reporters on Thursday that she was not interested in contesting the Gambegre bye-election since she did not hail from that district.
Making it clear that the Congress will follow due procedures and invite applications from interested candidates, she added that the party has not decided on any name for the Gambegre ticket.
Admitting that the dynamics of politics in Assembly bye-elections and Lok Sabha polls, Marak said the party is confident of a win since the people of Gambegre are with Saleng Sangma who was their four-time MLA and an MDC for one term.
The senior Congress leader however cautioned that the party leaders and workers should not be overconfident following the recent win in the Tura Lok Sabha seat.
