SHILLONG, July 4: MDA spokesperson and UDP leader Paul Lyngdoh on Thursday said the entry of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) into electoral politics marks a watershed moment in Meghalaya history.
“The VPP’s entry is a welcome sign because the plurality of the regional parties is a confirmed fact but for long how the party will remain an entity is something only time will tell,” Lyngdoh said.
Talking about the Lok Sabha polls, he said, “They (VPP) enjoyed that kind of victory because they had neither been vested with political power nor been in office. We suffered because of the anti-incumbency factor.”
“It not only worked against us but the perceived proximity of the NPP with the BJP played on the minds of the electorate,” he added.
“I will reiterate that each election is different from the other. At the end of the ADC elections, you will see a different result but we do acknowledge the fact that the VPP does make us look bad and we will try to improve where we have not been paying adequate attention,” he added.
On VPP’s claim to outdo all other regional parties in the state, the UDP leader said, “Everybody makes tall claims in politics. Even candidates who forfeit their security deposits will also claim that they are winning the elections. There is nothing strange about it.”
