SHILLONG, July 5: Senior journalist Deimaia Siangshai was elected as the new president of the Shillong Press Club (SPC) in an election held on Friday.
Siangshai, the former general secretary of the club, defeated fellow senior journalist Joe Thangkhiew by securing 91 votes to Thangkhiew’s 67.
The third candidate, veteran journalist Raphael Wajri, received six votes.
In another closely contested position, senior journalist Gershome Hat was elected as the new treasurer, defeating Martin Nongkhlaw with 113 votes to Nongkhlaw’s 50.
A total of 164 out of 185 members cast their votes in this election, which saw senior journalist Savio Diengdoh elected general secretary uncontested.
This election marked the formation of a new leadership body for the Shillong Press Club, ending a 15-year gap since the last election.
