SHILLONG, July 9: NPP leader and Cabinet Minister, Rakkam Sangma, expressed confidence that the National People’s Party (NPP) will not face setbacks in the upcoming Gambegre bypoll, despite the party’s recent defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, especially from Tura seat which was its stronghold.
Sangma highlighted the NPP’s resilience, recalling that the party once had only two MLAs in Meghalaya and now leads the state government. “Politics has different dynamics in different elections,” he said, while adding that issues vary between MP, MLA, and MDC elections.
The NPP is actively preparing for the Gambegre bypoll, aiming to field the best candidate. Sangma believes that if voters support the NPP, they will see positive changes in the constituency.
He dismissed the idea of seeking support from the BJP, clarifying that the NPP did not seek BJP’s support in the last Lok Sabha election, during which the BJP did not field any candidates in Meghalaya. Sangma also attributed the NPP’s Lok Sabha loss to the circulation of fake videos, acknowledging that unexpected events can impact political outcomes.
