SHILLONG, July 10: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) decided on Wednesday to refer the report of the delimitation committee, which addresses the readjustment of electorates in the 29 existing constituencies, to the Select Committee. This decision was made on the first day of the KHADC’s Summer Session after many members indicated they had not had the opportunity to study the committee’s recommendations.
Prior to this, KHADC Deputy Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pynshngain N Syiem tabled the report and introduced the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Constitution of District Council) (Amendment) Rules, 2024.
The Select Committee will be chaired by Deputy CEM Pynshngain N Syiem and will include Leader of Opposition Titosstarwell Chyne, senior MDC Bindo Mathew Lanong, and MDCs Jambor War and Lambor Malgniang. The Secretary of the Executive Committee (EC) will serve as the member secretary.
Deputy CEM Syiem emphasised the urgency of the matter, acknowledging the necessity for the members to thoroughly review the report’s recommendations. “We agree that the report should be referred to the Select Committee since we cannot take away the rights of the members to properly study the recommendations of the committee. But we will try our best to see that the Select Committee is able to complete the task to study the report at the earliest,” he stated.
Syiem also mentioned that if needed, a special session would be convened to present the views and observations of the Select Committee.
On Tuesday, the EC had unanimously approved the Delimitation Committee’s report and decided to introduce the amendment rules for the delimitation of the constituencies in preparation for the upcoming district council polls.
