SHILLONG, July 13: Shillong College was gifted 2.9 acres of land from the Elaka of Laitlyngkot during a programme on Saturday.
The donation aims to establish an off-campus site, making education more accessible for students from nearby villages.
The new campus will help students avoid the expenses and adjustments associated with relocating to the city.
It may be mentioned the village of Laitlyngkot approached Shillong College with the proposal.
Meanwhile, Shillong College principal, Dr. E Kharkongor, described the development as a significant milestone.
She emphasised the need to meet the NEHU administration to discuss management, course approvals, and necessary arrangements.
Expressing confidence in overcoming these hurdles, citing the college’s strong reputation and A+ accreditation by NAAC, Dr. Kharkongor said, “People have said that we needed to expand, but I did not give it a second thought because we thought we were doing enough. Shillong College is a college that gives admission to so many students from the outskirts of Shillong.”
She, however, now sees the project as essential due to the potential and lack of opportunities for students.
Meanwhile, Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliem, who was the chief guest, expressed his excitement for the project, pledging his full support to ensure its timely commencement.
“It is not going to be easy, especially with the funds and maintaining the college, but since it is a project for education and the future of the students in this area, collaboration and everyone’s helping hand is very necessary,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the sirdar of the elaka noted that this project has long been desired by the people of Laitlyngkot and nearby villages.
