SHILLONG, July 15: The joint force of the NPP and the BJP failed to secure a win for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the recently held Lok Sabha elections in the Tura parliamentary constituency. Despite this setback, the BJP remains optimistic about improving its performance in the upcoming Gambegre bypoll.
However, the BJP is expected to face significant internal challenges, as the NPP plans to field Mehtab Chandee, wife of Conrad Sangma, in the by-election. Speaking to media persons on Monday, BJP leader AL Hek confirmed that the party would contest the bypoll with full force, despite acknowledging the challenge posed by Chandee.
Hek emphasised that every election is tough, and the BJP is prepared to compete vigorously. When asked about the party’s strategy for winning the by-election, Hek noted that the BJP’s chances depend on the number of candidates entering the fray.
Currently, the party has not received any applications from aspirants, but BJP vice president Bernard Marak, who lost the last election against Conrad Sangma, is emerging as a probable candidate to secure the party’s ticket for the upcoming by-election from the saffron party.
