GUWAHATI, July 16: Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati (IIT-G), as the only IIT in Northeast India, has undertaken several innovative projects aimed at enhancing education in Meghalaya, focusing on advanced STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning and teacher development.
Under the aegis of the Ministry of Education’s Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan Projects, IIT-G, in collaboration with Samagra Shiksha Meghalaya, has undertaken multiple state-level initiatives to enhance STEM education, foster innovation, and build capacity among students and teachers in Meghalaya.
So far, over 50,000 students across 2200 schools have been covered under the initiative in Meghalaya.
The initiatives include establishing 50 tinkering labs in secondary schools; Robotics Kit project aimed to supply kits to 750 primary and secondary schools; excursion trip – MEGHQUEST, which exposed over 4,000 students from more than 2,000 schools to advanced scientific research and technology at IIT-G and a school mentoring project which enhanced pedagogical skills for over 2,000 teachers.
Besides, the institute has designed kits containing over 40 experiments aligned with the school curriculum; formed dedicated science and math clubs to foster experiential learning and also facilitated events such as Science and Math Olympiads and quiz competitions.
On the collaborative approach to uplift the education landscape of Meghalaya, IIT-Guwahati Director Devendra Jalihal, said, “We are dedicated to using our resources and expertise to enhance the educational experience in Meghalaya, ensuring that both students and teachers have access to the best tools and methodologies. By providing cutting-edge equipment, comprehensive training and continuous support, we aim to create an environment where learning is interactive, engaging and effective.”
“We believe that through these initiatives, we can significantly impact the quality of education in Meghalaya and set a precedent for educational excellence in the entire Northeast region,” Jalihal said.
