Cabinet okays Pepsi plant at Mendipathar

SHILLONG, July 19: The state Cabinet has cleared a proposal of the Varun Beverages Limited to set up a Pepsi plant at the Mendipathar industrial area of Garo Hills.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday said the firm will invest around Rs 300 crore in the plant which will also produce fruit juices.
As per the industrial policy, the state government will give special incentive to the company as it is making investments of over Rs 100 crore in the state.
It will be given the benefits of subsidy, interest subvention and reimbursement of SGST of 200%.
According to Sangma, the company will also have a plant to produce juices from local fruits. He said 90% of the non-managerial staff will be locals. He added that 50% of the managerial staff will have to be locals within two years of the setting up of the plant.
It is expected that around 500 people will be employed in the plant. The state government is giving land to the firm on lease. An amount of Rs 6 crore was paid as premium.
Although the proposal was cleared a long time ago, the matter was referred to the Cabinet for deciding on special incentives to the company.
In addition, the Cabinet renamed ten roads and two buildings in the state.
The approach road from NH-217 to Baghmara market has been renamed at Captain Williamson Sangma Road.
The road from Sohra gate to Mawsmai will be renamed U Thomas Jones Road.
The road from Mawkhar community hall to Jaiaw Langsning community hall will be renamed as Dr Hugh Gordon Roberts Road.
The road from PA Sangma Road in Tura towards Holy Cross Hospital has been renamed as Late Bishop George Mamalassery Road.
The Raitong building will be renamed as Lum Shyllong building.
