SHILLONG, July 20: The longstanding issues surrounding hawkers in Shillong continue to persist, now extending to the New Shillong Township (NST). Despite the new town’s incomplete development, hawkers have already begun setting up their stalls.
During a recent visit to NST, it was observed that hawkers are establishing shops starting from Ishyrwat. These vendors offer a range of goods, from fruits to exotic birds and pineapples; the phenomenon is particularly noticeable at a junction just before NEIGRIHMS.
Shillong is already facing challenges with hawking activities, as the government struggles to find solutions for relocating over 700 registered farmers conducting business across various parts of the city. The expansion of hawkers into the new township adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing situation.
