Campaign for school dropouts in Nongpoh

NONGPOH, July 25: A one-day campaign aimed at opening doors for education to children and addressing school dropouts was held on Thursday at Mawshang village, organised by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) of Ri-Bho, under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). The event saw a significant turnout of villagers from Mawshang and neighboring areas.
The campaign featured several notable resource persons, including I Lyngkhoi, MJS, Secretary of DLSA; RK Syiem, Legal Aid Counsel; Q Mawphniang, Legal Aid Counsel; D Mawphniang, Block Resource Person; W Khongsit, WP/SI from the Police department; and T Kyndiah, District Child Protection Officer.
Throughout the day, the speakers addressed various issues concerning children’s protection and their legal rights. They also highlighted the welfare schemes available for citizens’ benefit.
Ri-Bhoi DLSA Secretary Lyngkhoi emphasised the objectives and functions of DLSA, which aims to provide free and competent legal services to weaker sections of society, ensuring that no citizen is denied justice due to financial or other disabilities. She also provided information about NALSA and its Helpline Number 15100.
Legal Aid Counsel Mawphniang discussed the fundamental rights and the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act of 2009. She briefed the attendees on the Midday Meal Scheme for schoolchildren as well. Syiem, also a Legal Aid Counsel, elaborated on the objectives and functions of NALSA and the Child-Friendly Legal Services to Children and their Protection Scheme of 2015.
Additionally, WP/SI Khongsit from the Police department lectured on Child Marriage and Its Prohibition Act of 2006 and the POCSO Act. District Child Protection Officer Kyndiah discussed child rights and sponsorship.
