Shillong, July 29: Meghalaya has witnessed unprecedented temperature rises in the first half of 2024, with the mercury soaring to record highs at various Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stations across the state. According to data released by the IMD, three major locations — Shillong, Sohra, and Umiam (Barapani) — have experienced significant temperature spikes, marking a concerning trend in the region’s climate.
In the state capital of Shillong, the highest temperature recorded was 29.8°C on July 27, the highest so far since January.
Known for its usually moderate climate, Shillong has rarely seen such high temperatures, prompting concerns among residents and environmentalists about the potential long-term impacts of global warming.
Sohra, commonly known as Cherrapunjee and famed for being one of the wettest places on Earth, recorded its highest temperature of 30.9°C on May 26. This temperature anomaly has surprised many, considering Sohra’s typical weather patterns dominated by heavy rainfall and cooler temperatures.
Umiam experienced the highest temperature among the three stations, with the thermometer hitting 35.3°C on May 1.
This marked increase has raised alarms about the potential for heatwaves and their effects on the local ecosystem and agriculture.
The rising temperatures in Meghalaya reflect a broader pattern of global climate change, which has led to more frequent and severe weather extremes.
Experts suggest that immediate measures need to be taken to mitigate the effects of climate change, including enhancing green cover, adopting sustainable practices, and increasing public awareness about environmental conservation.
