NONGPOH, Aug 6: Severe flooding on Monday following a downpour which lasted hours has caused hardships to locals in Jirang, prompting local MLA Sosthenes Sohtun to make a visit across various parts of the constituency to personally inspect the flood damage.
Speaking to the media, Sohtun reported that Monday’s flooding was extremely severe, affecting numerous schools in border areas from Jorabat to Khanapara.
The classrooms were inundated with floodwaters, leading to the closure of schools today.
In addition to the schools, the flooding also affected residential homes, crops, and roads in many villages within the Jirang constituency, especially in areas like Baridua, Killing, Umtyrnga, Nongspung, and others.
The Jirang MLA said that the Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi, Abhilash Baranwal, has instructed the Block Development Officers and Gramsevaks to visit the affected villages, assess the damage suffered by the residents, and expedite the provision of urgent relief to the victims.
