SHILLONG, Aug 7: The Meghalaya Linguistic Development Forum (MLMDF) has come down heavily on the recent attacks on ethnic minorities in Bangladesh, including the destruction of temples, vandalism of the Indian Cultural Centre, especially the destruction of the bust of Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem.
In a statement, it said, “These acts of violence and intolerance are deeply concerning and completely unacceptable in modern civilised world. It is despicable that a student protest for democratic reforms have taken such violent and in human shape.”
The MLMDF raised alarm over the threats to the safety and security of students from Meghalaya and other Indian students in Bangladesh. “The well-being of these students must be safeguarded, and immediate measures should be taken to ensure their protection. The Bangladesh government must be aware that Meghalaya and the Indian subcontinent has deep-seated relationship with respect to trade and commerce, education and as well as tourism. The long standing relationship must be respected and action must be taken,” it appealed.
The destruction of Hindu temples and other cultural sites represents not only an attack on religious freedom but also an affront to cultural heritage and diversity, it added. “These actions are a direct violation of human rights and undermine the values of tolerance and coexistence that are essential for a peaceful society. The Jehadi activities in Bangladesh against minorities must be severely condemned by all in the civilised world,” the forum said in the statement.
The forum has particularly sought the safety and security of all residents, prosecution of the perpetrators after thorough investigation, inter-faith and intercultural dialogue, and protection of the cultural heritage.
