Differently abled athlete from Meghalaya creates history, wins silver in BOCCIA Challenger

NEW DELHI, Aug 8: Sachin Chamaria, a differently abled athlete of Meghalaya and first Indian male, who created history by winning silver medal in the “World BOCCIA Challenger 2024” held at Cairo.
BOCCIA is a game for the differently abled players who throw the ball with the hand or foot despite their disabilities. Sachin challenged his disability and fought through his struggles, achieving an extraordinary feat, winning a Silver Medal in the Category, male, individual and a Bronze Medal in the Pair categories respectively in the games last month, according to an official statement here today.
He is the first Indian male to accomplish this at an international level in the Sport of Boccia. Last year, Sachin had the honour of representing India at the Asian Para Games in China.
Earlier this year, he won his consecutive Gold Medal at the National Championship of Boccia and was awarded the Inspirational Sportsperson of the Year, 2023 by the Paralympic Committee of India. Sachin was also awarded the most coveted Power Corridors’ ‘Indian Achiever’s Award’ for his contribution to sports by Union Minister, Nitin Gadkari earlier.
Rajendra Chamaria, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Star Cement and father of Sachin expressed happiness over the rare achievement.
Founded in 2016, Boccia India has been instrumental in promoting the sport across the country despite challenges with remarkable achievements like those seen at the “World Boccia Challenger 2024 Egypt”. Indian Boccia team remains focused on rigorous training and preparation for future competitions, including the Olympic Games.
