SHILLONG, Aug 12: An unidentified number of persons broke open the gates of the Mawjymbuin Cave in Mawsynram between Sunday night and Monday morning and performed religious rituals.
The incident comes in the wake of an order by the High Court of Meghalaya, asking all parties to come up with a solution on the ban imposed by the Mawsynram Dorbar Shnong on Hindu rituals at the cave, before the next date of hearing on August 14.
Mawsynram Rangbah Shnong, Hiamdor Rapsang told The Shillong Times that at around 8 am on Monday residents found that the gate to the cave was broken.
Rapsang said when the locals went inside the cave, they found some rituals had been performed inside the cave.
The locals noticed earthen lamps (diyas) along with some money offerings inside the cave.
“We could not trace the people who performed the rituals,” Rapsang said.
He said the Dorbar Shnong lodged an FIR at Mawsynram police station and a police team from Shillong also arrived at the cave to investigate the case.
When contacted, police said they have registered a case and investigation was under way.
