JOWAI, Aug 13: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) of West Jaintia Hills, in collaboration with the Synjuk ki Waheh Shnong War Jaintia Hills, conducted an inspection of the Dawki border with Bangladesh on Tuesday. During their visit, the FKJGP met the Officer in charge of Dawki Police Station, urging him to bolster security in the border areas through increased collaboration with local village authorities.
The inspection also included visits to several BSF checkpoints along the route from Riahjalong to Amdoh, where the union members noted a significant shortage of BSF personnel, with some checkpoints found completely unmanned. The FKJGP also reported the construction of houses by Bangladeshis near the border pillar, raising concerns about the encroachment.
President of the Waheh Shnongs, Twinson Rymbui, and general secretary Kampher Pohlong expressed their worry over the insufficient presence of BSF personnel, especially amid the current unrest in Bangladesh. They called on government authorities to take immediate action to prevent smuggling activities, which they believe could threaten the peace and order in the region.
President of FKJGP West Jaintia Hills, Damien War, said that during the inspection, they discovered damage to the border fencing, which has made it easier for individuals from Bangladesh to cross into India.
