SHILLONG, Aug 14: The Lapalang Dorbar Shnong on Wednesday decided to take drastic action against polluters after it plastics discarded by ruthless polluters, during an intensive inspection.
Rangbah Shnong of Lapalang Kyntiew Sohtun said, “We are going to summon these residents who don’t show responsibility and discard their garbage anywhere and everywhere instead of giving it to the garbage collecting trucks and we will impose a fine on them heavily so that they do not repeat their thoughtless actions.”
This follow the meeting of the 15 Rangbah Shnong of Nongthymmai Pyllun held at the office of the Meghalaya Institute of Governance, during which action plans were formulated to put up netting over the rivers flowing through their localities and also to put up garbage traps in drains flowing from residences.
Sohtun, however, felt that if CCTV cameras were to be placed in his and other localities, such regressive actions would not take place and residents would be more careful lest they be fined. “The Shillong Smart City Project is supposed to place CCTV cameras in all the localities and this will have multiple impacts. Drug users, thieves and other trouble makers including polluters will be deterred from doing what they have been doing, with the hope that they would never be found or apprehended. The government should ensure that this happens at the earliest,” Sohtun said, adding that a strong directive from the government against polluters, especially those dumping garbage in rivers, would help empower the Dorbar Shnong to take action.
As of now, the Rangbah Shnong will be levying a fine on the person whose name appears on the online purchase package. The Lapalang Dorbar has summoned the person who discarded the rubbish on Thursday.
