Deputy Collector held for accepting Rs 50,000 bribe
PALGHAR, Aug 14: A Deputy Collector of Palghar district was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 to grant permission to a tribal to purchase land.A tribal community member seeking to purchase land from another tribal individual visited the district collector’s office on August 1 to obtain the necessary permission for the transaction.During this visit, a clerk allegedly solicited a bribe of Rs 50,000 from the complainant on behalf of deputy collector (general administration) Sanjeev Jadhavar, the ACB official said.The complainant approached the ACB on the same day. During verification, the clerk informed the complainant to wait as transfers within the office were anticipated. On Tuesday (August 13), the complainant met with Jadhavar, who allegedly demanded Rs 50,000 and accepted the bribe in front of witnesses, the official said. Jadhavar was arrested under the Prevention of Corruption Act. He was remanded to police custody till August 17. (PTI)
Parents die by suicide unable to repay son’s gambling debts
ABDULLAPURAM, (Andhra Pradesh) Aug 14: A married couple died by suicide due to their inability to repay debts incurred by their 22-year-old son through online gambling, police said on Wednesday.U Maheshwar Reddy (45) and his wife ended their lives on Tuesday night in their farm at Abdullapuram village in Nandyala district.“The couple consumed a soft drink laced with insecticide as they could not repay the debts to the tune of crores of rupees incurred by their son,” police said. According to police, Maheshwar Reddy had already sold five acres of his land to clear debts worth Rs 2 crore. He also disposed of the family home and other assets as per a settlement arrived at a local kangaroo court for clearing the remaining debts.For the past six months, the couple was living with a relative while the son was residing in Hyderabad.Mounting pressure from lenders has forced the couple to take the extreme step, they added. ‘Bunty aur Babli’ inspired couple held for theft
NEW DELHI, Aug 14: The Delhi Police has arrested a married couple for allegedly stealing a mobile phone from a house in north Delhi, officials said on Wednesday.Gaurav and Vandana, both aged 30, were inspired by the Bollywood film ‘Bunty aur Babli’ and involved in several cases of thefts, robberies, and snatching.The police said, a call was received regarding a theft at in north Delhi.The local residents had caught the culprits who were taken into police custody. On interrogation, the couple confessed to having committed robberies, snatchings, and thefts for long inspired by the characters of ‘Bunty-Babli’, police said. The couple told police that they targeted houses that were open early morning as people usually go for morning walks or to the temples, police said. ”They also admitted to stealing a mobile phone from the house of the complainant,” said the Police said the two were habitual offenders and also history-sheeters. The accused have been produced in a city court they said. (PTI)
