SHILLONG, Aug 17: After the passing of former Chief Minister and Chairman of the Meghalaya State Planning Board, Salseng Marak, a revered and visionary leader, Co-Chairman of the Meghalaya State Planning Board, John F Kharshiing, on Saturday, expressed his grief at Marak’s demise, extending heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.
“Shri Marak’s contributions to the state and his gentle demeanor have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time,” said Kharshiing in a statement issue here.
Marak, known for his soft-spoken and down-to-earth nature, served as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya during the periods of 1993 and 1998.
During his tenure, he was instrumental in the formation and notification of the Meghalaya Economic Development Council, which was inclusive of representatives from all political parties. His visionary leadership brought Swiss and Austrian experts to the state, who suggested the installation of ropeways to ease city traffic and connect the remote villages of Meghalaya—a proposal made nearly 28 years ago that continues to resonate today.
As the Chairman of the Meghalaya State Planning Board from March 2013 to January 2018, Marak led numerous on-ground inspections across various districts and conducted a record number of review meetings with different departments. His tenure saw the compilation of a list of priority roads in the state and the assignment of specific sectors to board members for review and recommendation. His contributions during this period were vital in shaping the state’s infrastructure and planning.
