JOWAI, Aug 17: The All Jaintia Muster Roll Workers and Labour Union (AJMW&LU) held its 9th Annual General Meeting on Saturday at the Shangpung Pohshnong Pohlyngdoh Playground here, commemorating the union’s 9th anniversary. The event saw the participation of muster roll employees from various government departments, Mid-Day Meal workers, and labourers from East and West Jaintia Hills districts.
The chief guest for the occasion was Minister in-charge of Food and Consumer Affairs Comingone Ymbon.
In his address, Ymbon commended the union for its relentless efforts in advocating for the rights of day labourers. He encouraged the workers to continue their hard work despite the modest honorarium they receive. Emphasising environmental conservation, Ymbon urged the attendees to plant tree seedlings in areas where trees have been cut down, suggesting that for every tree felled, ten new trees should be planted.
The AJMW&LU, established on August 17, 2018, under the leadership of Khroo L Pariat, has been a steadfast advocate for the rights of muster roll and Mid-Day Meal workers, ensuring they receive their entitled benefits from the government.
The meeting was chaired by vice president of the union Meri Shangpung. Adviser and founder of the union, KL Pariat, and president of the All Jaintia Mid-Day Meal Worker Union, Jerry Anderson Suting, also delivered inspiring speeches. The general secretary, Hunbeitki Dkhar, gave the welcome address, setting the tone for the day’s events.
The second session of the meeting featured a discussion on various issues concerning the workers, followed by cultural performances that enriched the program, with traditional songs and dances adding a festive spirit to the occasion.
