SHILLONG, Aug 23: Coal traders and laborers in West Khasi Hills are hopeful that the long-awaited resumption of coal mining through scientific methods will soon commence, after enduring a decade of hardship following the National Green Tribunal’s ban on ban on unscientific mining of coal.
It is pertinent to note that the government has initiated steps toward implementing scientific mining by organising public hearings.
Speaking to media persons on Friday, Hima Nongstoin Land Owners Coal Traders & Producers’ Association president, Maiantis Mawlot, that a public hearing is scheduled for August 27 at Sdad Dkhar, West Khasi Hills, to gather public opinion before resuming coal mining in compliance with legal regulations.
In preparation for this, the Association has held a meeting with local organisations and community leaders to discuss the issue. “With a united decision, they have resolved to fully support the upcoming public hearing for the benefit of the local population,” Mawlot said.
