PHULBARI, Aug 24: Continuing its crackdown, the Forest Department of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) confiscated two vehicles carrying illegal timber on August 22.
The crackdown follows earlier raids made to timber mills in Phulbari area where two sawmills were shut down and equipment and timber worth lakhs seized from them.
As per forest officials, the second seizure was made from Batabari by forest staff with the help of local CSOs from the Rajabala region at about 5:45 pm on August 22 while the first one was also made on the same day from near the village of Rongmachokgre at about 5 pm by another team from Phulbari range.
“We will continue to keep vigil on our forests and work on ensuring these are not destroyed by such senseless acts. Our forests are being destroyed just so that some people can make a fast buck. These acts need to stop, especially given the situation we are facing everywhere across the world,” said a forest official on condition of anonymity.
