HC marks PIL on NH-6 as suo motu after petitioner’s death

SHILLONG, Aug 27: The High Court of Meghalaya has decided to register the PIL filed by Kynjaimon Amse in 2022, which deals with the deplorable condition of NH-6, as suo motu PIL after the death of the petitioner in a tragic accident on August 23.
S Panthi, counsel for the petitioner, submitted that as the issue is of great public importance and involving public utilities, the PIL may be kept alive and prayed that the matter may be taken up as suo motu PIL.
The court considered the prayer of the counsel and ordered the PIL to be registered as suo motu PIL.
The court also appointed Panthi as Amicus Curiae to assist the court in the case.
S Sengupta, counsel for the respondent, submitted that though a status report has been filed on July 24, he prayed that he may be allowed two weeks’ time to file the latest detailed status report showing the progress of repair work on the highway.
The PIL of 2022 mentions that a large section of NH-6 which connects the northern part of Assam to the south-eastern part of that state through Meghalaya is in very bad condition.
In particular, the petitioner complained of the stretch between Lumshnong and Malidor in the East Jaintia Hills district as being particularly deplorable.
