SHILLONG, Aug 29: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has appealed to Governor Chandrashekhar H. Vijayashankar not to extend the terms of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).
In a letter to the Governor, KHNAM working president Thomas Passah expressed the party’s dissatisfaction with the recent six-month extension granted to the councils, citing ongoing delimitation as the reason.
He noted that this extension is due to expire in the coming days, and reports indicate that the delimitation process has been completed, with the findings currently under government review.
“The delimitation process is over and the reports have been submitted to the Government. Since the delimitation is completed, there seems to be no other reason to further extend the term of the Councils,” Passah said.
He also referred to a provision under the Sixth Schedule with reference to the extension of terms of the district councils.
“Para (6A) of the Sixth Schedule clearly states that extension of the term of office beyond five years can be done only on a proclamation of Emergency or when holding of elections is impracticable,” Passah said.
