SHILLONG, Sep 1: Women from the Gorkha community in Shillong gathered with exuberance to celebrate Teej, a festival that serves as a vibrant symbol of female empowerment and unity. Amidst the global struggle for gender equality, these women have crafted their own unique approach to empowerment, rooted in tradition, shared experiences, and mutual support.
The Teej festival, marked by graceful dance, rhythmic songs, and the wearing of traditional red sarees, saw scores of women come together from various localities of Shillong. Sunday’s celebration, held at Gorkha Durga Mandir here, sent a powerful message of strength and resilience aside from the display of cultural heritage.
“Teej is a vibrant Nepali festival where women gather, dance, and celebrate their strength and resilience. Adorned in their finest attire, they sway to the rhythmic beats, their laughter and joy infectious. As they dance, they bond over shared experiences, empower each other, and create unforgettable memories,” said Sumitra Pradhan, president of the Akhil Shillong Nepali Mahila Samiti (ASNMS), speaking to The Shillong Times.
Sumitra emphasised that while dance and songs are central to the festival, the most crucial objective is to bring women together, fostering awareness of their rights, traditions and values.
“By providing a platform for women to express themselves, share their experiences, and support one another, Teej fosters a sense of community and solidarity among women, thereby promoting gender equality,” she added.
Sarita Pradhan, assistant treasurer of the organising committee of ASNMS, echoed these sentiments, highlighting that the celebration extends beyond just one day. “This is a lifelong thing. We come together under the Samiti and try to educate and empower our women in whichever way possible, no matter how small or big it is,” she said.
Reflecting on her own journey, Sarita shared how she transformed from a timid woman to a more confident and empowered individual through her involvement with the organisation and the festival.
As the festivities unfolded, the stage came alive with the vibrant energy of the participants. The women, dressed in their finest attire, mesmerised the audience with their graceful dance moves and soulful singing. The air was electric with their collective enthusiasm, as they performed with joy and abandon.
The celebration was further enriched by a traditional food court, offering a delectable array of local cuisines that delighted the gathered crowd. As the evening wore on, the singing and dancing continued with fervour, creating an atmosphere of unbridled merriment. The women, lost in the rhythm and melody, exchanged warm smiles and embraces, their faces aglow with happiness that would linger long after the festival had concluded.
