SHILLONG, Sep 3: Governor CH Vijayashankar praised the matrilineal form of society in Meghalaya, where women play a central role in maintaining societal harmony and passing down traditions.
While addressing the gathering during his visit to Khasi Heritage Village and Sacred Grove (Law Kyntang) at Mawphlang, Governor Vijayashankar said that it is great to hear women get more respect as compared to men in the Khasi matrilineal society.
He also spoke of the unique practices where the inheritance right to ancestral property goes to the youngest daughter of the family. “In our society, a woman moves to his husband’s place after marriage. But I was amazed to learnt that a man moves to his wife’s place after marriage and this cannot be imagined,” Governor said.
Meanwhile, the Governor said that tribal people and the Khasi society’s traditional institutions are the true lovers of nature, teaching the world its real value.
He drew parallels between the traditions of his native place and those of Meghalaya, describing the state as “Heaven on Earth” owing to its rich traditions and natural heritage.
The Governor highlighted the critical importance of forest preservation, stressing that forests do not only maintain the ecological balance but also hold deep cultural and medicinal significance.
“Meghalaya is a hub of medicinal plants,” he noted, urging the community to continue to protect and cherish these invaluable resources.
He called on the youth to uphold the traditional values bestowed by their ancestors, emphasising that this is the path to building a better society.
He emphasised two key areas for the state’s development — education, and the promotion of cottage and agro-based industries.
“Education should be accessible to everyone, and we must ensure cottage and agro-based industries flourish. These are vital for the economic empowerment of our communities,” he said.
Assuring his full support, the Governor told the people, “Whatever cooperation you seek from Raj Bhavan, we are with you.”
The Governor’s visit was following an invitation by the delegation of the KHADC, which had recently met him.
Vijayashankar was received by KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pyniaid Sing Syiem, Deputy CEM Pynshgain N Syiem, Leader of Opposition Titosstrarwell Chyne and representative of the Hima Mawplang.
The Governor also visited the PHE Inspection Bungalow and met the PHE department officials. He was briefed on the Great Shillong Water Supply Scheme, and the ways to improve and enhance the water supply in the state.
