Shillong, Sep 4: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday responded to Opposition criticism of the short duration of the recently concluded Autumn Session, stating that the government is prepared to extend House sittings even until midnight if necessary, provided that the Speaker’s office is willing to offer dinner and midnight tea.
In a pointed remark aimed at the Opposition, Tynsong noted that while they demand longer sessions, many members are unable to remain in the House for even an hour. “We have been doing justice, whether it’s government business or private members’ business. We carefully calculated before finalising the calendar,” Tynsong said while addressing media persons.
He further criticised the Opposition for a lack of coordination, pointing out that when a motion or resolution is submitted, it often appears that the Opposition is disorganised. Tynsong highlighted the government’s flexibility, noting that the House sittings were extended on several days to ensure that all items on the agenda were addressed.
Tynsong also commented on the Opposition’s tendency to introduce additional items, such as zero-hour notices, short-duration discussions, and special motions, which he described as unnecessary.
