Saipung, Mawshynrut shine on Matchday 8

Shillong, Sep 8: Saipung Block Sports Association and Mawshynrut Sports Association were the biggest movers on Matchday 8 of the Meghalaya Youth League 2024 yesterday. The tournament is organised by the Meghalaya Football Association with the support of the Meghalaya government. It was business as usual in Zone B’s U-14 category with West Jaintia District Sports Association and Amlarem Block Sports Association winning their respective matches 4-0 and 6-0 against Laskein Block Sports Association and Saipung respectively.
However, when it came to the U-16 category, Saipung beat Amlarem 3-1 to take second place in the group. West Jaintia, meanwhile, made it a double victory with a 7-1 result against Laskein. In Zone C, Sohra Sports Association won their first match of the league with a 2-1 victory over Riwar Mihngi Football Association in the U-14 division. This was the only match in this age group in Zone C this weekend.
Riwar Mihngi, though, took the U-16 match between the two teams 3-1, which was their first win and which also took them above Western Ri-Bhoi Sports Association in the points. Western Ri-Bhoi lost to leaders Ri-Bhoi District Sports Association 2-0.In Zone D, the see-saw battle between Nongstoin District Sports Association and Pyndengumiong District Sports Association in the U-14 category took another turn yesterday. Nongstoin beat Pyndengumiong 2-1 to take back first place in the standings, while Mawkyrwat District Sports Association pipped Eastern Border Sports Association 1-0. The match between Tyrsad Area Sports Association and Mawshynrut ended in a 0-0 draw. The U-16 match between the latter two teams saw Mawshynrut come from behind to defeat Tyrsad Area 3-2. Eastern Border and Mawkyrwat were involved in another high-scoring game, with EBSA taking it 5-3. The Pyndengumiong U-16 boys drew 2-2 with Nongstoin, who continue to remain at the top of the zone but their lead has been cut thanks to Eastern Border’s win. Mawshynrut, meanwhile, jumped two places to third with their victory over Tyrsad Area.
There were no matches in Zone A as its round robin matches were completed last week.
