SHILLONG, Sep 9: Trinamool Congress’s Mukul Sangma on Monday alleged that the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) is using state resources to gain an edge in the upcoming by-polls in Gambegre constituency.
This assumes significance as TMC is the third party to rally in charging the NPP with this allegation.
Earlier, the BJP had backed its political rival, Congress, alleging that its MDA ally, the NPP, was providing benefits to those who pledged their support to the party and excluding those families who do not.
“We are collecting inputs and will take stock of the matter. Is it only Gambegre where the minsters, departments and the officers have responsibilities?” Sangma said, criticising the government’s selective attention to infrastructure development in the constituency. He cited an example where an officer was allegedly ordered on the spot to repair a road stretch in Gambegre.
Sangma also criticised the government for its lack of attention to road repairs across the state, noting that many roads remain neglected. He questioned the sudden availability of funds for road repairs in Gambegre, while other areas are consistently denied resources.
“If you are doing it in response to an emergency or any natural calamity, then that is a different thing. But for other normal repair and upkeep of the road, there is a procedure set by the department that prepares the estimates and submit them for approval,” he said.
