NONGPOH, Sep 11: Four highway robbers involved in looting vehicles along National Highway 6 have been apprehended by the Ri-Bhoi police on Tuesday night. This came shortly after they assaulted and looted the driver and his companion of a fish-laden vehicle at Shangbangla.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Additional Superintendent of Police, Ri-Bhoi, B Jyrwa, revealed that over the past two to three months, there have been numerous complaints from drivers about criminals who have been robbing and assaulting them.
He further informed that around 1:16 am on Wednesday, a pickup truck carrying fish, en route to Marngar and driven by Abu Sadek from Morigoan, Assam, was stopped by the assailants at Shangbangla. The criminals, in an Alto car with registration number AS 01 FN 4202, attacked both the driver and his companion, looting their money and mobile phones.
Upon receiving information about the incident, Nongpoh Police launched a search operation around Nongpoh town. Shortly after, they located the criminals’ car in Pahamsyiem and arrested one of the culprits, Ricky Tangsang (26) from Sajer, Nongpoh. Another suspect, Mustafa Lyngdoh (32) from Umlyngdkait, managed to escape at that time.
Following an intense manhunt involving a special police team and the CRPF, Mustafa Lyngdoh was eventually arrested from his garage. His confession led to the arrest of two more individuals, Kyrshanbor Marwein (22) from Mawroh and Shem Warjri (27) from Umsning Proper ‘A’. The latter two were using an unregistered white Baleno car during the crime.
In connection with this incident, the police seized both vehicles used by the criminals, along with six mobile phones and Rs 6,750 in cash.
