SHILLONG, Sep 16: After a remarkable 62-year career of facilitating the safe delivery of over 1,000 babies, 80-year-old Kyiek Mukhim, a nurse-cum-midwife from Meghalaya, passed away on Monday. Hailing from the remote village of Kharang in the East Khasi Hills district, Mukhim was the hope for countless families, serving her community with dedication until her recent retirement due to age-related health issues.
For over six decades, Mukhim worked tirelessly as one of the few healthcare providers in her area, helping mothers give birth in the absence of nearby medical facilities. Kharang village, like many other remote regions in Meghalaya, is located far from hospitals, with the closest healthcare centre being 40 kilometres away.
Mukhim had only recently taken voluntary retirement due to her declining health, marking the end of a long and dedicated career.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed his condolences and lauded Mukhim’s extraordinary contributions. “Today we lost Kong Kyiek Mukhim, 88, a nurse and midwife who assisted over 1,000 childbirths in remote Kharang village in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district. She served the people at a time when healthcare institutions were 40 km away. Exemplary life!” Sangma posted on X.
