SHILLONG, Sep 21: The state Congress on Saturday said hitting the streets against price rise instead of coming up with suggestions and solutions serves no purpose.
The Voice of the People Party (VPP) staged a sit-in at the Malki ground to protest the rising prices of essential goods in Meghalaya and the denial of an opportunity for the party to raise the issue during the autumn session of the Assembly.
“Price rise is a burning issue affecting the common man but we gain nothing by just hitting the streets unless there is an intention of achieving something or coming up with solutions,” Congress MLA Ronnie V Lyngdoh said.
Reminding that Congress has demanded a minimum support price (MSP) for crops at the Centre and in the state, he said MSP will help both the consumers and the producers or farmers.
“MSP will check manipulation of prices,” he added.
Lyngdoh said more money needs to be put in the hands of the people to beat inflation and the INDIA block would have increased the wages under MNREGA to Rs 400 a day and initiated other such initiatives had it been able to form the government at the Centre.
“Sometimes, the market dictates the prices and we need to offer a solution by not just hitting the streets but by helping people get more money to afford the food,” he said.
