Kanpur, Sep 27: Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has added another feather to his illustrious cap, becoming the Indian bowler with the most Test wickets in Asia.
Ashwin achieved this milestone during the second Test against Bangladesh at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, taking his tally to 420 wickets in the continent.
With this, he surpasses the legendary Anil Kumble, who had 419 wickets in Asia, and joins an elite club of bowlers with over 400 wickets in the region.
Ashwin, who has taken 523 wickets across 102 Test matches, has been particularly dominant on Asian pitches. His latest achievement came on Day 1 of the ongoing Test when he dismissed Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.
Bowling with his trademark precision, Ashwin came around the wicket to trap the left-hander LBW with a delivery that went straight on, denying the batter any turn.
Despite reviewing the decision, Shanto’s dismissal stood, giving Ashwin his seventh wicket of the series and a place in the record books.
With 420 wickets in Asia, Ashwin now trails only Muttiah Muralitharan, who holds the top spot with 612 wickets on the continent.
Ashwin joins Muralitharan and Kumble in the exclusive 400+ wickets club, further cementing his legacy as one of India’s greatest spinners. In conclusion, Ravichandran Ashwin’s latest milestone not only highlights his remarkable consistency but also solidifies his status among cricket’s all-time greats.
By surpassing Anil Kumble and joining the prestigious 400-wicket club in Asia, Ashwin continues to be a pivotal figure in India’s bowling attack. With his skill and precision still at their peak, Ashwin’s journey promises to inspire a new generation of cricketers, while his record-breaking achievements add to his already legendary career.
