The NPP Rajya Sabha member has offered to resign if his wife is found involved
SHILLONG, Sep 29: The Khasi Students’ Union on Sunday appreciated Rajya Sabha member, Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi for asking Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to probe the alleged irregularities in the Meghalaya Public Service Commission.
The union, however, said Kharlukhi demanded an independent probe to clear the name of his wife Corina Lyngdoh, who is a member of the MPSC.
The KSU’s employment monitoring cell chairman, Reuben Najiar told The Shillong Times that the MP should have demanded a judicial probe for the candidates affected by the alleged irregularities in the conduct of the ongoing Meghalaya Civil Services (preliminary) examinations.
He insisted the KSU did not target any commission member when it raised the issue and that Kharlukhi was wrong to say its demand tarnished the image of his family.
“We are concerned with the wrong things taking place in the MPSC. We have advocated the need to revamp the overall functioning of the commission,” Najiar said.
Earlier, Kharlukhi offered to resign if any credible probe establishes any charge of irregularities involving his wife.
Significantly, there has been no reaction from the MPSC so far.
Kharlukhi, a senior NPP leader, told Sangma on Thursday to probe the alleged irregularities in the conduct of the MCS (preliminary) examinations. He wrote to the CM a day after the KSU petitioned Governor Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar for an inquiry against MPSC officials.
The KSU said the MPSC has often faced the charges of being corrupt and nepotist.
“I would like to draw to your kind attention that, of late, it has come out in the news about irregularities in the Meghalaya Public Service Commission. Mrs Corina Lyngdoh, who is one of the members of the Commission, is my wife and I feel that this has tarnished the image of my family. So, to set the record right, I would request the government to go for an independent inquiry on this issue,” Kharlukhi wrote.
“I requested the CM that the independent probe should be completed within a month,” he told reporters, asserting that his interest lay in clearing his wife’s name.
“If the judicial inquiry finds my wife, I will step down as the Rajya Sabha MP,” he asserted.
