SHILLONG, Oct 4: Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar has reaffirmed his commitment to being a “people’s man” and forging deeper ties with the residents of the state.
Addressing a gathering at the 30th Annual All-Faith Prayer meeting here on Saturday, the Governor shared his experiences since taking office in Meghalaya.
He acknowledged both the warm welcome he received and the challenges of winning the trust of the people of Meghalaya.
In his address, the Governor recounted advice from a spiritual leader, Mahamandraswati Ji, who had told him that the people of Meghalaya are initially cautious of outsiders.
“The people of Meghalaya won’t come nearer to you, and it is very difficult to win their hearts,” Vijayashankar quoted the spiritual leader, adding that once their trust is earned, “they sacrifice anything for you.”
The Governor also recalled guidance from Prime Minister Narendra Modi before taking up his role.
“You see, Mr. Vijayashankar, open the doors of Raj Bhavan. Don’t sit in Raj Bhavan. You go and visit each and every tribal village. You go and visit each and every border village of Meghalaya,” he quoted the prime minister as saying.
This advice, the Governor said, shaped his approach to reaching out to the people of Meghalaya, especially in remote and border areas.
Vijayashankar also stressed the importance of being accessible to all, not just political leaders or prominent figures.
“Even a common man wishes to come and meet you in Raj Bhavan; you allow him to come and meet you,” he said, emphasising his desire to connect with people from all walks of life.
He further expressed his goal of being a “common man’s Governor” and leaving a lasting impression.
