AHAM moves CM for elevation of flood-prone road in WGH
TURA, Oct 7: The A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) CEB in Tura has written to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, seeking the upgrade of the PWD road from Dalu Dapgri to Dimapara via Sonagre in West Garo Hills. According to a statement issued by the organisation, the road in question happens to be the same one from where a teacher and his son were swept away in the recent floods, which led to their deaths. According to the AHAM, the road, which serves as an essential link for local commuters, has been repeatedly impacted by heavy water currents due to its low-lying nature. The organisation, in its memorandum, sought that the current height of the road be raised to safeguard it from future floods. “It is crucial that the road is elevated to the level of the NH-217B. This will ensure that it is safeguarded against flooding and remains functional throughout the year. The filling up of the low-lying area should be a priority to bring the road to a higher and safer level, making it more resilient to heavy rains and water flow,” AHAM said, while also suggesting that the existing hume pipe culverts all along the way be replaced with RCC bridges. In addition, the organisation also raised the issue of weak timber bridges that still exist along NH-217B. “Numerous timber bridges along the NH-217B exist from Kondokgre, Gasuapara to Sibbari. The most dangerous and vulnerable bridges are found at Angratoli Reserved Forest, Telekali, Dumnikura and Dimagre. In the recent past, Daldam River washed away the Dumnikura Timber Bridge, which, till now, remains unattended. Breakdown of any of them would create an economic crisis in some portions of the SGH,” the AHAM said.
